Mostly Halloween Link Dump

The side bar of the site is essentially a “link dump” but I have so many links, I need to fill the entire page with them.

0) Halloween, music: Halloween music compilations. Get them while it’s today.

1) Comedy: The Palin Porno as read by Ricky Gervais:

See more funny videos at Funny or Die

2) 8 Things You Need to Know About Polish Americans. Sounds scary!

3) 5 Curious Coincidences Between the Phillies’ World Series Wins . Curious, but not amazing.

4) Film: Shaw Brothers movie posters. The Shaw brothers made most of those Kung Fu films you watched as a kid (provided you’re my age, and watched them on local TV). Link via PCL Linkdump.

5) Where To Get Your Quick And Dirty Horror Movies - Free Online. The Thing, Plan 9 from Outer Space, Rock Horror Picture Show, and more.

6) 6 Of Your Favorite Things That Are Secretly Making You Fat. For me: everything is making me fat.

7) Overweight dolphins put on a diet. Dolphins are like big blue tubes of fat.

8) Truly amazing photos of the inside of caverns, with more link to photos inside the article.

9) David Tennant To Leave Doctor Who. Who will replace Who? My guesses: Patrick Stewart, Charlie Brooker, Ricky Gervais, Simon Peg, or Papa Lazarou.

13) Halloween: Infant-sized Alien chestbuster costume.

14) Comic strips: Comics… in my pants. Like the Garfield parody comics.

Interview with the guys behind the Venture Bros.

Funny dudes.

The Venture Bros. Soundtrack in March

I’m been a fan of Jim Thirlwell’s music for about 18 years now, and it’s cool when ever he makes an impact on the mainstream. Jim provided the theme songs for the Venture Bros. TV show, and now a record of Venture Bros. music will be released in March of 2009. That’s good news for Thirlwell fans, Venture Bros. fans as well as people looking for theme music to accompany their misadventures.

Here’s the and
Venture Bros themes to whet your appetite.

Rest in Peace: Rudy Ray Moore a.k.a. Dolemite

One of my first web sites was a site dedicated to Rudy Ray Moore a.k.a. Dolemite (Internet Archive).

I was introduced to Dolemite by my friend Craig who said it was “the Blackest movie” he had ever seen; I knew I had to see it. This was back in the early to mid 1990s when I was virtually unemployed, living off credit cards and a dwindling savings, renting videos by the stack, and drinking like a porpoise. I was a slacker — no doubt about it. A good day for me was: wake up at noon, pick a credit card with the most bandwidth, rent a stack of B-movies, buy a six pack of beer & a falafel, watch videos until night, go out drinking until 2am, and head home to surf the web (and gopher) and post on Usenet until the sun came up. My favorite movies were Blaxsploitation movies: Superfly, Truck Turner, Foxy Brown. It was enviable that I would rent Dolemite, and once I did I became a Rudy Ray Moore fan for life.

Trailer for Dolemite:

Eventually I got into graphic design, and a friend asked me if I knew how to make a website — I didn’t, but I quickly learned and practiced by making random sites about whatever interested me at the time: Isaac Hayes, Pam Grier, cicada insects, and of course Dolemite. My Dolemite for President site had a following, and there were plenty of other sites too: the guy who runs Dolemite.com had a site (pre-Dolemite.com), the official Shocking images Dolemite site (still exists), The Dolemite Explosion Trivia page, “An Original Dolemite page”, and Mogley’s Dolemite page. Around the same time Rudy’s records started to be released on CD, and Dolemite, The Human Tornado, Disco Godfather, and Peaty Wheatstraw were re-released on video (and then DVD).

Around 1995-1997 I met Rudy Ray Moore 3 times: twice at the Chiller Theatre convention in New Jersey, and once at a random 1970s convention in New York. Here’s a picture of me with Rudy:

Rudy Ray Moore and a Fan

Meeting Rudy in person was a great experience. He was super friendly and psyched to meet his fans. My friend Mike, Rudy and I got into a conversation about all the bands sampling him. Rudy didn’t know about some of the rock bands like the Supersuckers and Big Chief who sampled him — that was the first and only time we got to school the master. (Bis sampled him too on Return to Central, but that was later on).

Today I was thinking about the election and I wondered if Rudy Ray Moore was running for president again. Rudy ran every presidential eleection, and he sold pins and other souvenirs promoting his campaign. I even voted for Rudy in 1996 — a write in vote — no kidding. So I went to Dolemite.com, and saw the sad, sad news that Rudy has passed.

Some news articles: ‘Dolemite’ Star Rudy Ray Moore Dead At 81, Appreciation: The “Godfather of Rap”, Rudy Ray Moore, ‘Godfather Of Rap,’ Dies

Rudy’s impact on comedy, independent and Black action film, and music are undeniable and lasting. Looking back I’m certain he inspired me to stop slacking, learn a craft, get a job and make something of myself. Thanks Rudy — I’ll miss you, and I’ll remember you forever.

This is a accurate glass rendering of a human skull (filled with delicious vodka)

Dan Akroyd is one funny Dan, whether intentional or not — he just does stuff that’s funny. Now he’s selling Crystal Head Vodka: an a accurate glass rendering of a human skull filled with delicious vodka. For real! I ordered mine online for around $40. I had to have one. I like skulls and vodka.
