Classic - Thor Heyerdahl: Real Norwegian Hero

Filed under: tiki — Dan @ 5:41 pm

Yesterday I was loitering at the local used bookstore (The Raconteur) looking for unusual texts to feed my sick mind. I scored a book about Calvert DeForrest, and a book by Thor Heyerdahl titled Aku Aku. Thor was a 20th century Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer who is most famous for building a raft out of balsa wood and sailing from Peru to Easter Island (the island with the big heads). He did this to prove that the inhabitants of islands like Easter Island probably migrated from South American rather than Asia. Thor’s belief was based on the fact that cultural artifacts (like Tikis) and vegatation from Polynesian islands closely resembles the cultural artifacts and plants of South America.

Thor risked his life to prove a point. I admire that.

The Kon-Tiki Museum is dedicated to preserving Thor’s memory. Check it out.
