RedLetterMedia’s Phantom Menace and Star Trek movie reviews

Update: He’s got an Avatar review now too

Last night I spent a few hours (yikes!) watching RedLetterMedia’s Phantom Menace and Star Trek movie reviews on YouTube. The narrator’s voice, which is like Ted Levine portraying a homicidal Ford plant retiree, is a sticking point for most people. If you can get past the voice, the Pizza Roll obsession, and his jokes about murdering his wife (yikes again), the narrators reviews (brutal dismemberments) of these films are spot-on. I’ll admit that some of the humor had me laughing to the point of tears, like the comparison of Star Trek Nemesis to the 2nd Austin Powers movie or Picard’s non-chelant treatment of an artifact in Generations, after gushing over it previously in the movie. I also learned some things, like how they reused the explosion of a Klingon ship from Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country for Star Trek: Generations. I want to take the day off from work, just so I can watch these again.

The narrator is obviously a fan of the first 3 Star Wars films, as well as Star Trek:TNG, and he has a deep dislike for the new Star Wars films as well as the direction of TNG movies. Some fans are willing to accept mediocrity, or suspend their disbelief, or not get mired in technical issues and bloopers, but not this guy. So I have to ask: does a “true fan” swallow whatever bears the brand of their favorite sci-fi franchise, or does a “true fan” reject mediocrity or deviations from the initial spirit of their favorite franchise?

Here’s a sample of some of the reviews — the subsequent parts are on YouTube.
